Railway Design

Demand for rail travel has significantly increased in recent years. As a result, our clients require a safe and efficient railway that meets the needs of their customers in terms of frequent services and convenient routes. On top of that, electrified railways provides low carbon emissions.

From development of new rail schemes to upgrade and electrification of existing railways SDEA_Engineering Solutions helps our clients through the entire project lifecycle delivering integrated solutions that improve experience of all passengers and freight services.

The Overhead Line Equipment (OLE) design relies on the supply of electrical power to the vehicle units. Power is supplied through the catenary via interaction with the pantograph.

The main mission of an OLE designer is to ensure compatibility and correct performance of these two main parts to achieve project requirements. A designer must be able not to just provide solutions for open routes, but for specific points of the infrastructure that need high accuracy and detail to comply with all safety and design standards.

Our team has worked with several basic design ranges: NR Series 1, NR Series 2, NR GEFF, OLEMI, ADIF CA-160, ADIF CA-220 and others including conductor beam and tram wire. These systems span between 25kV AC supply to 750V DC and maximum operating speeds of 225km/h.

Designs are developed from onsite survey data as, for example, Point Cloud technology, which provides a virtual accurate perspective of the site. Please refer to our BIM modelling section to find out more about this technology.
